The aesthetic "Cottage core", also known as "farm core" or "country core" originated in 2016; but was heavily popularized in 2019 thanks to queer women and social media, particularly by the app Tik Tok. Cottage core is a romanticization of western rural life. With ideas about living in harmony with nature and being separated from the busy, unsatisfying flow of modern city life. It is also seen as a rejection of capitalism and off off-grid living.

GENERAL INSPIRATION:

COLORS AND PATTERNS:

Cottage core's colour scheme is typified by soft and light colours such as pastels, beiges, browns and whites. Prominent patterns include gingham, stripes, delicate florals, and other nature-inspired motifs. these patterns can often be seen in the form of embroidery

DRESSES:

Dresses are a staple of this aesthetic with most of them being inspired by Vintage silhouettes. Theses dresses are usually long flowing and inspired by the milkmaid silhouette. Something you would feel comfortable running through a field in.

TOPS:

Tops follow a similar style to dresses being feminine and usually have poofs ruffles or bow detailing. Their tops are usually worn in white or beige colours that can be easily styled. Cardigan tops are another popular silhouette and are usually styled ina similar way.

BOTTOMS:

When pants are worn they are usually wide fit in the legs and pulled in in the waist. A paper bag silhouette is also popular at the top of pants and shorts. skirts are usually midi or mini length with floral or coloured detailing.

SHOES:

Cottage core shoes take after vintage shoes mostly ones popular in the fifties and sixties. Mary janes and sale shoes in earth tones are popular styles. These types of shoes are usually paired with embroidered socks. For a casual look go for earth-toned converse.

ACCESSORIES:

Common accessories include bows straw baskets, straw hats, brimmed hats, socks, headscarves, knits bags, dainty jewellery and items with flowers or mushroom or butterfly motifs.
